The Gleaners is a lined A5 notebook containing 100 lined pages printed on 115 gsm uncoated paper, and the covers are made from 300 gsm laminated silk card; the whole notebook feels smooth and sleek. The design is very unusual, and you are unlikely to see many around, so if you buy this, you will have something that will catch people's attention.
These notebooks are a representation of woodcut artwork from a children's annual, which was originally published around the late 1890s to early 1900s. My grandfather and his brothers once owned the annuals, and currently, my mother is their guardian; if I am lucky, they will come down the line for me to take care of. If you are fortunate, you can still find these annuals online, but they tend to be the more recent copies. Chatterbox was first published in December 1866 and was edited by Reverend John Erskine Clarke until 1902, when Harvey Darton replaced him; the last publication was in 1955. For me, they depict a bygone time, and although most of the artists are now entirely unknown, I am aiming to bring their creations back into the light.
